They’re taking it slow.

Drew is still married.

Blake is too respectful.

So, they’re taking it slow—something Drew has never been any good at. She nips at her thumb, tapping the nail against her teeth every so often as she watches Blake at the opposite end of the table. Conference room sixteen is on the tenth floor of Luxe and almost entirely glass. In this light, with her hair down, curls in full volume against her shoulders, eyes hazel and focused… Blake is unfairly beautiful. And slow is not going to work.

If Drew is honest with herself, she thinks this is why she came back to LA. Not with the hope that Blake has spent any number of years pining for her, but because maybe in time, they could get here. She was prepared to be patient. Rekindle their friendship. But now she knows the taste, feel, of Blake’s lips, and thinking about anything else is just impossible.

“Drew?”

She drags her gaze away from Blake—smiling at the way Blake, when aware of Drew’s distraction, bit down on her bottom lip and fixed her eyes on the laptop in front her—and she looks at the art director. Assistant to the art director. Jax. On his first solo assignment. She would be a little concerned, but Blake will be behind the camera and nothing else matters.

Jax’s thick, dark brows furrow, drawing lines in his forehead, his walnut complexion spotless and youthful. He glances between the pair of them then shakes his head as if he’s imagined something. “I just wanted to assure you that Luxe is as committed to a graceful shoot as you are. Shay has been clear in your wishes. It’s not meant to be erotic. And Luxe is not that kind of magazine.”

Drew breathes a laugh. “Thanks for clearing that up, Jax.” They’ve been over it five times. She’s beginning to think it’s not just that he’s nervous. He likes to talk. Her eyes drift back to Blake’s. They’re already on her.

Jax says, “And we’ll make sure you have adequate coverage for your…you know.”

Blake’s chuckle is soft.

“Something that isn’t too obvious,” Jax goes on.

Drew’s lips stretch in a grin. She doesn’t want to look away from Blake again, but someone should take him out of his misery. “Yes, Jax. Of course.” She raises her brows at him, tries to keep her tone neutral. “Is there anything else?”

He shakes his head. “No. I think that’s it for now.” He starts to get to his feet and Blake follows, shaking his hand.

“We’ll be in contact.”

Drew remains in her seat, but offers him a smile and wave as he makes his way out.

Blake stops by the door and turns to look at Drew. There are holes in her cropped t-shirt, rips in her jeans, the laces of her platform combat boots are undone. Drew doesn’t even want to know how much she has spent on clothes that look like someone else has already worn them—probably too much—but she looks so lawless, it’s ironic.

“Comfortable?” Blake asks. Her lips smile, her eyes beckon.
